There are many theories on how Mangoes were introduced to the Indian Mainland, one in which it was introduced via Main land and the other through Indo Burmese region. Presently it is cultivated in India as well as in South and South east Asian countries, in Africa, in Australia and USA. Also Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Caribbean Islands grow specific Mangoes.

Characteristics of Mango

The Mango tree is a large branched tree growing close to 30-40 m in height and has a crown radius extending up to 10m. The fruit generally takes close to 3-4 months to ripe and varies in shape, size, color, fragrance & several other characteristics. Usually Mangoes are oval shaped and can also take up a round shape depending on the variety. The size varies from 2.5 cm to 30 cm and weighs roughly around 200-250 gms in the Indian subcontinent. The ideal temperature required for the growth of Mangoes is around 30 degrees celsius.

Nutritional Value of Mango

100gm of Mango contains 74 Kcals and is a Carbohydrate rich food which makes up 15% of the total nutrients contained. Mangoes also contain 0.6 gm of Protein and 1990 micrograms of Beta Carotene which is higher than any fruits. Beta Carotene is a precursor of Vitamin A which acts as an antioxidant, slows down cognitive decline and helps in keeping lungs healthy. Consuming Mangoes during the season helps store Vitamin A in the liver which lasts up to a year and helps in preventing Vitamin A deficient diseases such as Night blindness. Mangoes are also rich in Vitamin C which forms about 16 mg when it is fully ripened.

World of Mangoes

Mangoes grow in both tropical and subtropical climate which makes it one of the best suited crops to grow in any region. Mangoes are grown in 83 countries with India and its neighbors dominating the production of Mangoes. India alone accounts for 53% of the overall Mango production, followed by China, Thailand and Mexico.
Despite India being the largest producer of Mangoes, it’s yield is low primarily due to post harvest damages and mango orchard sizes being smaller compared to other nations.

Export of Mangoes form only 0.60% of the total production, India accounts for 15% of the total exports and is mainly transported to the Middle Eastern countries.

India and Mangoes

Mangoes are grown in over 1.1 Mn Hectares producing 11 Mn tonnes and the states contributing to production of Mangoes are Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Tamil Nadu & Punjab.

Government of India in the year 2001-02 formed special zones named Agri Export Zones which would concentrate on a specific produce, where from sourcing of raw materials to implementing better agricultural practices to helping export would be done by AEZs. There are 11 AEZs in total in various states of which 5 are in Andhra Pradesh, 2 in Maharashtra, 1 each in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal.

In Andhra Pradesh, Krishna District tops in the production of Mangoes followed by Chittoor and Khammam. In Maharashtra, Alphonso and Kesar are two important varieties which forms bulk of the production. Alphonso is grown in Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Sindhudurg. Kesar is grown in Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts. In West Bengal, Malda and Murshidabad districts are chosen as AEZs.

Indian Varieties of Mango

India is home to more than 1000 varieties, however only very few are commercially cultivated. Alphonso and Kesar Mangoes are very popular and are grown in the western region. Banganapalli, Totapuri and Neelam are from the southern states. Langra, Chausa, Dasheri are from Northern Region and Fazil is from eastern states.

Banganapalli

The fruit gets its name from the place it is grown in – Banganapalle of Kurnool District in Andhra Pradesh. It currently occupies 70% of the total cultivated mango area in the state. It is called as Benishan named after Zamindar of Panyam and Nawab of Banganapalle. The fruit is oval in shape and has firm skin and its mid season variety is used for canning.

Alphonso

Alphonso also called Hafoos, Hapus or Aapoos is considered to be the King of Kings and named after a portuguese general and military expert who was instrumental in setting up the colonies. The fruit is grown mostly in western region of the country namely Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad districts and is one of the expensive varieties of mangoes in the country.

Kesar

Kesar is another variety grown in the foothills of Girnar and was mistakenly called Kesar (Saffron) by Nawab of Junagadh looking at its orange pulp. Primarily grown in Saurashtrian region of Gujarat and is given a GI status by India

Raspuri

These mangoes are primarily grown in the southern parts of India especially Karnataka. They are rich in carotenes – a rich source of Vitamin A. Raspuri mangoes are used in making jams, jellies and smoothies.

Gulab Khas

Summers have been made bearable in Bihar by blushing of Gulab Khas. Gulab Khas is best consumed when it is chilled and scooped straight out of skin

Sugar baby variety of mango is grown in Tamilnadu and Karnataka region. Primarily rich in carotenes and is used for making smoothies
