The economy of Ambattur is mainly depends on industries. This locality is also known as ancillary hub. However, in the late 2000 many IT companies have come up in Ambattur. It is the biggest small scale industrial estate in South Asia. Near the Ambattur railway station, a railway concrete sleeper manufacturing company is located. Connectivity
Road and Rail Connectivity is superb in the locality as the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road passes through Ambattur. Chennai-Kolkata Highway is just 7 km from Ambattur. The New Chennai Bypass Road between Maduravoyal and Madhavaram passes through Ambattur Industrial Estate and connects NH4 with NH5 and NH205.

Ambattur Industrial Estates has a bus Terminus located adjacent to MTH Road and has MTH city buses connecting Ambattur with other parts of the Chennai City. Many buses from Avadi and the outskirts of Chennai also pass through Ambattur, offering good connectivity.

Ambattur has two railway stations in the neighbourhood on the Chennai-Arakkonam railway line. Ambattur railway station caters the residential areas whereas, Pattaravakkam railway station caters the Ambattur Industrial Estate area.

It has excellent connectivity to Chennai International Airport which is located at a distance of 24.6 km via Mount Poonamalle High Road and 25 km via Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

The Ambattur Industrial Estate has commenced its work to establish a common effluent treatment plant that will also serve to other industries in the neighbourhood.
