A city in Kerala on the Malabar coast, Kozhikode is the second-largest city of the state. It is at a distance of about 380 kilometres north of Thiruvananthapuram. In 2012, it was given the title City of Sculptures (Shilpa Nagaram), owing to the various architectural sculptures that dot the city. Besides being a centre of flourishing domestic and international trade, Kozhikode also contributes to the all-round development of the district in trade, commerce, and economic development. it is the main trade hub of North Kerala.
City infrastructure
With a reasonably well-developed transport infrastructure, the city enjoys smooth connectivity to other locations in the state and outside. There is a large number of buses, both privately run and those operated by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, that ply on major routes and link the city to adjoining parts of the state. You can also avail of regular luxury bus services to prominent places like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ooty, Coimbatore, etc. national highways like NH-66, NH-766, and NH-966, connect this city to various important locations. A number of strategic state highways passing through the city also boost its connectivity. Kozhikode is one of the cities that have been granted new-generation buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
Another major project to be implemented soon in the city is the proposed Kozhikode Light Metro, a mass rapid transport system that received approval in May 2015. Two information technology parks are also under construction. The first one, UL Cyber Park, has already started operations. Malaysian Satellite City and Birla IT Park are other projects in the offing. These IT Parks and industrial townships are believed to create employment avenues for lakhs of professionals.
Real estate
Feroke, Thondyabad Bypass, Thiruvannur, and Eranhipalam are the top areas offering several prime properties. Other locations where you can find good real estate projects include Chalappuram, Chelannur, Chelavoor, and Kakkodi. Property prices here have soon a considerable increase in recent times.
Lifestyle
The tourist attractions in Kozhikode include Kozhikode Beach, Valiyangadi Market, Mananchira Pond, Sweet Meat Street, Mavoor Road, Sarovaram BioPark, Tali Shiva temple, Kuttichira mosque, Kappad Beach, Beypore sea bridge, Kirtads Museum, and Thusharagiri Falls. When it comes to education, Kozhikode boasts many premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), etc. The University of Calicut was the second university to be set up in the state. Other major institutes are Government Engineering College, Malabar Christian College, St Josephs College, Government Law College, and Government Arts and Science College. Besides, there are a few research institutes. The city is also home to multiple shopping malls.
